March 11th, 2002:
Tribute in Light was conceived by artists Julian LaVerdiere and Paul Myoda. This powerful tribute, which consists of 88 searchlights arranged in two vertical beams, serves as a luminous memorial to the nearly 3,000 lives lost in the tragic events of 9/11.
The beams of light rise into the Manhattan night sky, reaching a height of approximately four miles. They create a stunning visual that can be seen from miles away.
Assembled on the roof of the Battery Parking Garage south of the 9/11 Memorial, the twin beams are comprised of eighty-eight 7,000-watt xenon lightbulbs positioned into two 48-foot squares, echoing the shape and orientation of the Twin Towers.
Since that first installation, it has become an annual event. Each year, on the evening of September 11, the Tribute in Light is illuminated and stands as a powerful testament to the enduring legacy of love and remembrance.
