The Founding of the IALD: Giving Voice to Architectural Lighting Designers

The International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) stands as a cornerstone organization in the professional lighting design community, fostering excellence, education, and collaboration among lighting designers worldwide. Since its inception, the IALD has played a pivotal role in shaping the field and elevating the art and science of lighting design.

The IALD is based in Chicago and was founded in 1969 by a group of pioneering lighting designers who sought to establish a professional organization dedicated exclusively to the discipline of architectural lighting design. The founding members included influential figures such as Ray Grenald, Lesley Wheel, Howard Brandston, and Richard Kelly, among others. These early members were instrumental in defining lighting design as a distinct profession, separate from electrical engineering or interior design.

At the time, all professional lighting industry organizations were focused on the science, technology, and engineering aspects of lighting… not the aesthetic design of the lighted environment.

The association was created to provide a platform for sharing knowledge, setting professional standards, and promoting the value of lighting design in architecture and the built environment. Its founding marked a formal recognition of lighting design as a specialized field requiring both artistic vision and technical expertise.

From the outset, the IALD aimed to:

– Promote the highest standards of lighting design practice

– Foster professional development and education

– Encourage innovation and sustainability in lighting

– Advocate for the role of lighting designers in the architectural process

Over the decades, the IALD has grown from a small group of dedicated professionals to a global organization with hundreds of members representing diverse specialties, including architectural, theatrical, urban, and sustainable lighting design.

Through innovative partnerships with other trade organizations such as the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES), the United States Department of Energy, and others, the IALD has been able to have a major influence on the lighting industries largest trade shows and conferences (such as Lightfair), published industry standards and reference publications, and gained industry recognition through the IALD International Design Awards.

The IALD has had a profound impact on the lighting design profession in several key ways:

– Professional Recognition: By establishing certification programs such as the Lighting Certified (LC) credential, the IALD has helped formalize qualifications and raise the profile of lighting designers in the industry.

– Education and Resources: The association offers conferences, workshops, publications, and online resources that keep members informed about the latest technologies, design trends, and best practices.

– Networking and Collaboration: IALD events provide opportunities for designers to connect, share ideas, and collaborate on projects, fostering a strong sense of community.

– Advocacy and Standards: The IALD works with industry stakeholders, regulatory bodies, and standards organizations to influence lighting codes, sustainability guidelines, and design criteria, ensuring that lighting design contributes positively to human experience and environmental responsibility.

Its commitment to education, professional standards, and community building has elevated the role of lighting designers in shaping the built environment.
